Obtaining a Background Check

Overnight, multi-day camping programs require a background check for all volunteers over 18 years of age. A new background check is required even if you have already completed one through your employer or another organization.

YES will maintain your privacy by not sharing your information. The results of the background check will only be viewed by YES’s Executive Director and the Director of Programs & Partnerships.

If the background check shows any criminal record, YES reserves the right to determine whether or not to move forward with your application. Please note that any future arrests will be shared with YES which may affect your participation status.

Step 1 - Sign & Mail the CalVECHS Waiver

The California Department of Justice (DOJ) requires that prospective and current employees and volunteers sign the CalVECHS Waiver (BCIA 9018) before they get their background check. The waiver must be completed and signed annually by every current or prospective employee and volunteer. YES must retain the original copy of every BCIA 9018 for at least three years.

  1. Print and fill out the CalVECHS waiver.

  2. Mail or drop the signed waiver at:

We require the original copy, the hard copy, of this waiver with your wet signature. We cannot accept this waiver as a PDF with an electronic signature.

Step 2 - Obtain a Background Check & Get Reimbursed

  1. Find a location where you can get a background check near you, by clicking here.

Print and take this Live Scan Form to a location near you. You will not be able to get the background check without this form.

  1. Fill out your information on the Live Scan Form.

  2. You will need to present a valid government identification (ID) when you take this form to a location near you.

  3. The cost to get a background check is normally $25-$45 dollars. YES will reimburse you for this cost.

  4. To get reimbursed by YES, text or email a picture of your receipt and your completed and signed Request for Live Scan Service form to: ‪(510) 210-3752‬ or to blanca@yesfamilies.org.

Please black out your Social Security number and any other identifying information prior to taking a photo of these documents.

About LiveScan

LiveScan refers to the machine as well as the process of fingerprinting by which the fingerprints are captured and transmitted electronically using a LiveScan machine.

LiveScan can facilitate the electronic submission of fingerprints and the subsequent automated background checks. It is an inkless fingerprinting process. The fingerprints captured by the LiveScan machine are digitally transmitted to the servers at the Department of Justice (DOJ) in a few seconds.

Please note:

  1. Your fingerprints will be retained by the CA DOJ and searched against other fingerprints on file, including latent fingerprints.</p><p>

  2. You have a right to obtain a copy of your criminal history record, if any. You, as the applicant, have the right to challenge the accuracy and completeness of your criminal history record, and to obtain a determination as to the validity of your record before YES makes a final determination concerning your eligibility for employment and/or volunteering.
