“My nine-year journey with YES has introduced me to young people who have devoted their lives to social activism. I have met parents and youth who valiantly address their challenges every day. I have seen participants go home thinking about doing things they never dreamed of. And with all these people, I have had many occasions to share very special moments that I never would have had otherwise.” – George Eade, YES Volunteer
Each year, we rely on more than 50 extraordinary volunteers who donate over 2,500 hours to ensure that YES serves the needs of our participants and community. Volunteers may help out in the following ways:
Family Camp Weekends
Family Camp volunteers have the opportunity to join us five weekends a year – twice in the spring, once in the summer and twice in the fall (from Friday at 5pm to Sunday at 3pm). The majority of Family Camps are located at YMCA Camp Loma Mar located near Half Moon Bay where we stay in cabins in the redwoods. New volunteers are teamed up with a veteran volunteer and paired with a camper family from Richmond for the weekend. This gratifying opportunity allows one to connect with participants and meet other volunteers while sharing in the beauty of nature. Preference is given to those people who have experience working with low-income families and/or youth. Spanish-speaking is a plus. Because Family Camp volunteers interact with children, a state background check is required to participate.
Camp Days are local trips planned to regional parks here in the East Bay. There are typically 3-4 outings a year that take place on Saturdays from 10am - 3pm. Work often involves helping to supervise kids, leading activities and helping serve lunch. Because Camp Days volunteers interact with children, a state background check is required to participate.
Work with our Special Events Committee to plan and execute events benefiting YES. Our Rock in the Redwoods event and annual campaign are highlights of our fundraising efforts and a rewarding group effort to be involved in. Volunteers can help with outreach to sponsors, selling tickets, helping to set up the venue, and lending a hand during the event.
In Our Office
Office help is needed throughout the year on weekdays in our Richmond office from 9am-5pm in preparation for mailings and other events. Other office work could include answering phones, photocopying, data entry, conducting surveys, website assistance, social media, graphic design, and marketing outreach.
Board of Directors
Becoming a YES Board member is the ultimate volunteer position. Our board members have a passion for YES’s mission and its work, and they regularly attend bi-monthly board meetings as well as participate in annual events. Board members participate on at least one board committee and help with the fundraising for the organization, as well as making a monetary contribution each fiscal year. If you are interested in becoming a board member, please contact Executive Director Eric Aaholm or Board President April Suwalsky to learn more.
If interested in volunteering, please either email firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know the best way to contact you.
