 | PeaceTalk: Communication Workshops | |
 |
In 2007 YES began offering PeaceTalk workshops to the Richmond community. This new program was an outgrowth of a successful adult workshop topic at Family Camp called Powerful Non-Defensive Communication (PNDC). The overwhelmingly positive response from adult participants convinced YES that we had encountered a valuable tool to increase intimacy in the family and community while addressing the effects of poverty and the roots of violence.
Working closely with Sharon Ellison, PNDC’s founder, YES staff developed a curriculum that could be introduced to multiple user groups in Richmond, and we named it PeaceTalk.
PeaceTalk offers participants new ways to use basic communication tools. Moving from a traditional "War Model" of communication, which engenders defensiveness, into a powerful form of communication that engages with others non-defensively, allows true intimacy, vulnerability, and strength.
Requests for YES to facilitate PeaceTalk workshops and collaborate in violence prevention have come from a variety of community agencies and schools. Our goal is to have it adopted widely as an effective technique for promoting healthy relationships and preventing violence.
YES is very excited about incorporating PeaceTalk into the current multifaceted efforts to reduce and prevent violence in Richmond. Whether in the home, school, workplace, or larger community, when we change our communication patterns, we are addressing the very roots of violence, and increasing intimacy and connection.
